About the artist

Jozef Israëls, a Dutch painter, is celebrated for his major impact on European art in the nineteenth century. As a central member of the Hague School, he stood out among artists noted for their authentic portrayals of ordinary life and landscapes. Throughout his career, Israëls achieved widespread acclaim and was frequently considered the most esteemed Dutch artist of the late nineteenth century.

Jozef Israëls was born in 1824 in Groningen, Netherlands, to Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, had initially desired for his son to enter the business world. Nonetheless, Jozef’s early and intense enthusiasm for art eventually persuaded his family to let him pursue his true vocation as an artist, following much perseverance on his part.

Israëls commenced his formal art education at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he studied from 1835 until 1842. He later advanced his training in Amsterdam and in Paris, refining a style that merged traditional academic principles with acute observations of daily existence. Much of his artwork explored the hardships and strength of common people, particularly those of fishermen and farmers.

With paintings that deeply moved viewers, Jozef Israëls achieved both national and international recognition. His influence shaped many younger artists, and his enduring legacy can be found in museums and collections worldwide. Israëls is still regarded as a pivotal figure in Dutch art history, esteemed for both his empathetic outlook and his command of realism.
