About the artist

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was an important French painter closely linked to the Neo-Impressionist movement. Born in Douai, France, he began his artistic education with traditional techniques before eventually establishing his unique approach. He is particularly recognized for his expertise in Pointillism, where images are created by arranging small, distinct dots of pure color, frequently illustrating vivid landscapes and still lifes.

Cross held a crucial position within the Parisian art scene, contributing significantly to the progress of modern art in France. As a co-founder of the Société des Artistes Indépendants—a prominent organization that fostered experimental art beyond conventional academic standards—he helped provide opportunities for avant-garde artists. It was through this group that Cross encountered Georges Seurat, the pioneer of Pointillism, whose influence was pivotal in shaping Cross’s artistic path.

Later in his life, Cross developed rheumatism, which led him to move to the sunnier climate of southern France. There, he collaborated with another Neo-Impressionist, Paul Signac. In partnership, they began to move beyond the careful dotting characteristic of early Pointillism, adopting wider, more mosaic-like brushstrokes and embracing a freer application of color. This evolution in their technique became recognized as second generation Neo-Impressionism.

This new method had a major influence on the future of modern art, paving the way for the rise of Fauvism, which is noted for its vivid colors and expressive handling of paint. Today, Henri-Edmond Cross is honored for his innovative role in the history of Neo-Impressionism and for shaping the course of twentieth-century art as a whole.
