About the artist

Gustave Franciscus De Smet (21 January 1877 – 8 October 1943) was a distinguished Belgian painter whose contributions left a lasting mark on 20th-century art. He is chiefly recognized as a founding figure of Flemish Expressionism, a movement that employed vivid colors, simplified forms, and expressive brushstrokes to evoke emotion and atmosphere, rather than simply representing reality.

Raised in an environment that fostered creativity, Gustave De Smet cultivated his artistic abilities from an early age. He was the older brother of Léon De Smet, himself an accomplished painter. The two brothers often inspired one another, although Gustave’s art was deeply rooted in the emotive power and intensity associated with Expressionism, whereas Léon pursued a broader range of artistic styles throughout his life.

Together with artists such as Constant Permeke and Frits Van den Berghe, De Smet was instrumental in shaping the Flemish Expressionist movement. Their artworks commonly depicted scenes from rural life, the working class, and everyday experiences, infusing them with emotional richness and a distinctive sense of locality. De Smet’s application of bold colors and carefully structured compositions contributed greatly to defining the look of Flemish modernism.

Throughout his career, De Smet’s work received widespread acclaim and was exhibited extensively in Belgium and internationally. Today, his paintings are highly esteemed for their pioneering style and deep emotional impact, ensuring that Gustave De Smet remains a central figure in both Belgian and European modern art.
