About the artist

Albert Lebourg (1 February 1849, Montfort-sur-Risle – 6 January 1928, Rouen) was a distinguished French painter associated with the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements. Born Albert-Marie Lebourg, he was occasionally known as Albert-Charles Lebourg or Charles Albert Lebourg. His career was deeply intertwined with the Rouen School, a group noted for its significant role in advancing French landscape painting.

Lebourg focused on landscapes, skillfully portraying the scenic charm of the French countryside as well as urban settings, especially those surrounding Normandy. Renowned for the atmospheric depth and expressive illumination found in his paintings, his style epitomized the essence of Impressionism. Frequently, he painted rivers, waterways, and evocative skies, utilizing a subtle color palette and fluid brushstrokes to bring his vistas to life.

Over the course of his career, Lebourg’s approach gradually shifted, embracing aspects of Post-Impressionism yet maintaining his distinct sensitivity to both light and color. He exhibited his work at numerous prominent shows and was esteemed among his peers for his remarkable ability to convey ambiance and setting through landscape art. Today, many of his works are housed in museums and private collections throughout France and internationally.

Albert Lebourg remains celebrated as an influential figure in both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, especially in relation to the Rouen School. His paintings are highly regarded for their lyrical vision of the French landscape and for their significant role in shaping modern art during the closing years of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century.
